What to Know Before You Build A Fence In Kansas City, MO
Kansas City’s fence regulations are more straightforward than many of the KC suburbs. If you’re planning to install a fence on your KCMO property, here’s what you need to know.
Do I Need a Permit to Build Fence in Kansas City, MO?
No. Kansas City, Missouri does not require a building permit for residential fences. Fences are governed by Chapter 27 of the city’s Code of Ordinances — the Fences and Walls Ordinance — but there’s no permit application or approval process to go through before you build. That said, your fence still has to comply with the city’s rules on height, placement, and construction. Just because you don’t need a permit doesn’t mean anything goes.
Height Restrictions
The rules are simple. Fences in the interior side yard and rear yard can be up to six feet tall. Fences in the front yard and along the street side of a corner lot are limited to four feet. That’s one of the more common restrictions across the metro, and it applies whether you’re building wood fence, chain link fence, ornamental steel fence, or any other type of fence.
Placement Matters
Fences can be built up to side and rear property lines, but it’s the homeowner’s responsibility to know exactly where those lines are. If you’re not sure, get a survey done before you build. A fence on the wrong side of a property line is a headache that’s a lot easier to prevent than to fix. Corner lot homeowners need to pay special attention to sight triangles at intersections. Your fence cannot obstruct the line of sight for drivers, and the city can enforce this.
Design Standards
Kansas City’s nuisance code specifically addresses certain fence types. Barbed wire fences are declared a nuisance in residential zones. Electric fences with uninsulated conductors exposed to human contact are also prohibited within the city, with limited exceptions for agricultural and commercial zones. With wood, chain link, ornamental steel, you won’t have any issues.
