We Build With Western Red Cedar Pickets and Rails
Not all fence lumber is created equal. We use western red cedar because it’s naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insect damage. Cedar also holds up better against Kansas City’s swings between humid summers and freezing winters, with less warping and shrinking than cheaper pine or spruce alternatives. Cheap wood like pine will bend, bow, and crack far more than western red cedar. It also weathers beautifully over time, and if you want to stain or seal it, cedar takes finish better than just about any other wood. It costs a little more up front, but you’ll get up to twice as much life out of your fence because of it.
We Use Aluminum Screw Shank Nails
This is a detail most homeowners never think about, but it matters more than you’d expect. We fasten our wood fences with aluminum screw shank nails. The screw shank design grips the wood tighter than a smooth shank nail, which means your pickets stay put instead of working loose over time. And because they’re aluminum, they won’t rust — so you’ll never see those ugly black streaks running down your fence boards a couple years after installation.
