What to Know Before You Build A Fence In Lenexa

Lenexa is one of the fastest-growing cities in the Kansas City metro, and if you’re planning to install a fence on your property, there are local regulations you’ll want to understand before you start. Here’s a clear breakdown of what Lenexa requires.

Do I Need a Permit to Build a Fence in Lenexa?

A building permit is required for most new fences in Lenexa. The exceptions are limited: decorative fences under three feet tall, agricultural fences, and retaining walls under four feet. If you’re replacing an existing fence, you may still need a permit depending on the scope of the work. When in doubt, check with the city before you start building.

Height Restrictions

The maximum fence height in residential areas is six feet. If your fence is within three feet of — or sitting on top of — a retaining wall, the combined height of the fence and the wall cannot exceed ten feet total. That’s an important detail on some of Lenexa’s properties where retaining walls come into play.

Placement Matters

Don’t plan on putting your fence in easements or swales. These areas need to remain accessible for utilities and drainage, and a fence built there can cause problems — or end up needing to be removed at your expense. Corner lots have specific restrictions. You can install a fence along the side street as close as fifteen feet from the property line, but only if the fence is four feet tall or shorter and is an open style — meaning 50% or less opaque, like spaced picket or ornamental steel. If your fence is taller than four feet or is a privacy-style fence, it cannot be installed within the required setback. This is one of the most common surprises for corner lot homeowners, so it’s worth knowing upfront.

Design Standards

Like most cities in the KC metro, Lenexa requires the finished side of the fence to face outward toward the street and neighboring properties. Wood, steel, chain link, and iron are all allowed. The framing members — posts and rails — go on the inside. Lenexa also requires homeowners to keep their fences in good condition. That means no missing pickets, no leaning or swaying sections, and overall solid upkeep. A neglected fence can become a code issue.
